As I watched her stroke the softness of the baby’s head, I felt an urge to stop my car and throw myself prostrate at her feet to confess my sins. She was the Mother and I was the fallen, knee deep in the sticky trenches of both teenager and preschool. I wanted to list for her all the times I’ve failed over the past (nearly) 14 years of motherhood, warn her that her failures would come, and beg her to tell me it was all okay. I wanted her to promise me that it’s all okay. That we are going to be okay. She stepped carefully, each motion echoing the power to absolve even me for the days I wanted to give up, the days when I still want to give up. I wondered what she would say, that young mother, if I whispered to her that it gets so hard some days. How would she respond if I told her there are days ahead when sleep won’t come …
